Morocco, for a historic World Cup victory?

Baptism of fire for Morocco in the Futsal World Cup currently taking place in Lithuania. The Atlas Lions post a most promising performance, thanks to a large victory against the Solomon Islands. A first auspicious performance that nourishes the hope of a historic victory in world competition.

The Atlas Lions had the first of their tournament opener against Solomon Islands, with impressive performances up front and in defense with a 6-0 victory thanks to six different scorers. A victory over Thailand or Portugal in their remaining matches should be enough for them to reach the third round.

In the first half, the Moroccans quickly made the difference by leading 3 goals to 0 before closing the second half with another demonstration of their collective strength. Their goals came from Soufiane El Mesrar, Achraf Saoud, Raiss El Fenni, Bilal Bakkali, Othmane Boumezou and Soufiane Borite.

With this first victory, Morocco is entering its second game in a good position and could take advantage of a victory against Thailand to advance to the second round. The Asians lost to the favorites of Portugal (4-1). They will also have to give their all against the Atlas Lions to avoid seeing their chances of qualifying destroyed.

The second match of the national team will take place against Thailand, Thursday, September 16, before ending the group stage against the Portuguese, on the 19 of the same month.

This is Morocco’s third participation in the Futsal World Cup after Thailand 2012 and Colombia 2016. The Moroccan team were in pot 4 of the draw, alongside Vietnam, the United States, from Uzbekistan, Angola and Venezuela.

The Moroccan team have never made it past the group stage of the Futsal World Cup. However, this upcoming tournament should be different for the Moroccan team due to the quality the team has shown this year.

On May 29, the Atlas Lions won the Arab Futsal Cup for the first time in history. That’s not all, since Morocco is also the holder of the CAN Futsal title that it won against Egypt last February in Laâyoune.

The national futsal team can also boast of having lifted the trophy during the International Futsal Tournament in Croatia, thanks to their victory in the final against the United States (6-1).

As a reminder, the FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2021 will be held from September 12 to October 3, 2021, with the participation of 24 nations. Initially scheduled for September 2020, the event had to be postponed by one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The statistics of the team in the competition, as well as the experience acquired by the players during the last two World Cups, make the Moroccan futsal family dream of a great achievement in Lithuania.
